Partanna, Sicily

Inside of the never ending spaces downward from the main floor of the castle, lie room after room of barrels for making wine.  Many of them large enough to fit entire families of people in.  The stairwells and hallways leading down, through these rooms, and out of secret doorways, were probably built as escape routes.  However, as one walks through these endless corridors, it would seem (by the barrels, and bottles throughout) that whoever was escaping was a raging alcoholic and needed to be especially drunk to do so.
