Photo | Babaluci (Yeah…That’s Dinner)

Partanna, Sicily

Yes they’re snails, and yes they were delicious.  One of my favorite childhood memories of Sicily is going to a field with my family to harvest the babaluci (Sicilian for land snails).  They were everywhere!!  We plucked them from grasses, logs, fences…everywhere!  After soaking them in a pot of water for a bit, they’re ready to cook.  This particular dish is actually quite spectacular.  The babaluci are served in a light tomato garlic broth, which makes for awesome bread dipping.
