Gibellina – A Photo Essay

Gibellina (36) Gibellina (1)

Gibellina (Sicilian: Gibbiddina) was a small community in the mountains of central Sicily, just a half hour drive up la montagna from Partanna (my father’s home town), which was destroyed by the 1968 earthquake.

Now known as Ruderi di Gibellina (ruins of Gibellina), the city remained empty, as it was after the earthquake.  Instead of removing the debris, Artist Alberto Burri can be credited for covering the ruins in concrete, while preserving the shape of the buildings and streets – creating a sort of city of concrete blocks.

While slightly eerie at first, Ruderi di Gibellina really is an interesting piece of art for the landscape it sits on; creating a complete contrast of natural and man-made.
